SmallTalk Setup

Let’s get you talking!

Thank you for your purchase! Follow these quick steps and your new ChatterBox phone will be ready in minutes.

Getting Started

  1. Unbox your SmallTalk

Unpack your SmallTalk phone, connect the handset, and plug it into power.

  2. Let it connect

If you entered your Wi-Fi details in your ChatterBox account when you ordered, your phone will connect on its own. Give it a minute to find the network.

  3. Watch the handset light

As your phone starts up, the light on the back of the handset will turn solid red. Once it connects to the ChatterBox network, the light will turn solid green momentarily and then turn off.

Once the light turns off, your phone is ready to dial!

  4. Set up parental controls

If you haven't already, log into your ChatterBox account to set approved contacts and parental controls.

    Open ChatterBox Account

  5. Make a test call

Place a call to (and from!) an approved contact to confirm inbound and outbound calling work.

You're all set!

Congrats - you're ready to chat.

Note: If the handset light starts flashing red, your phone probably isn't connected to Wi-Fi. Follow the Wi-Fi Setup steps below.

Wi-Fi Setup

Seeing a flashing red light?

A red flashing light (not solid red) on the back of the handset means your phone probably isn't connected to Wi-Fi. To set the Wi-Fi network, you'll connect your SmallTalk to your home router/modem with a network cable (we included one in your shipment, but any network cable works).

  1. IMPORTANT! Unplug your SmallTalk phone from power before you start.

  2. Log in to your ChatterBox account.

    Open ChatterBox Account

  3. Go to the Devices tab in your online account and click the Update Network button.

  4. Enter your updated Wi-Fi information and click Save.

  5. Use a network cable (we included one in your original shipping box) to connect the SmallTalk to your home router. Plug one end of the network cable into the SmallTalk phone (into the port next to the power port) and the other end of the network cable into your internet router/modem.

This allows your phone to connect to the ChatterBox servers and download the latest Wi-Fi settings.

  6. Plug your SmallTalk phone into power.

  7. Wait about 2 minutes for the new Wi-Fi settings to download to your phone. (The light may flash intermittently during this time - that's normal.)

  8. Check the light on the back of the handset. It should be completely off. If it's still flashing red, give it another minute - the settings may still be downloading.

If it's still flashing after that, your phone isn't reaching us over the network cable. Check that the cable is firmly plugged in at both ends and that your router is on, then unplug the power cable and plug it back in. If the light still won't turn off, get in touch with us at chatterboxphone.com/support before going any further.

  9. Keep the network cable plugged in, and place an outbound test call to an approved contact and make sure that the call goes through. If it doesn't go through, get in touch with us at chatterboxphone.com/support for further assistance.

If the call goes through, continue to the next step.

  10. Restart the phone: disconnect both the network cable and the power cable from your SmallTalk, then plug the power cable back in. (Leave the network cable unplugged - this is the switch over to Wi-Fi.)

  11. Watch the light on the back of the handset as the phone starts up. It will turn solid red, then solid green, then flash red for a few moments - a brief red flash here is normal - and finally turn off.

If the light keeps flashing red, double-check your Wi-Fi settings in your ChatterBox account and repeat the steps above. If a second pass doesn't work, get in touch with us at chatterboxphone.com/support.

  12. Once the handset light turns off, lift the handset and check for a dial tone, then try dialing an approved contact number.

Your phone should now be connected to Wi-Fi!

If your call goes through without the network cable connected, your phone is connected and ready to talk.
